Right now, Donald Trump has unrestricted power to launch thousands of nuclear weapons at will. But if we act quickly, we can legally tie his hands and make it impossible for him to launch a nuclear war on his own — before it’s too late.
A single nuclear weapon is more powerful than all the bombs detonated in World War II combined. It’s clear there’s no greater act of war than the use of even one of them. And only Congress has the power to declare war.
Yet under the current system, the President has totally unchecked authority to use the thousands of nuclear weapons — a process that takes less than 5 minutes. It’s up to Trump and Trump alone.
We can change that. Two brave Congresspeople have proposed urgent legislation (“Restricting the First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act,” H.R. 669) to stop Trump from nuking us all.
So Global Zero and Daily Kos are partnering on a petition to Congress in support of that legislation.
The law would require Congressional authorization for nuclear strikes, except in response to an incoming nuclear attack. In other words, it would block Trump’s ability to impulsively light the world on fire.
Trump’s election has made it abundantly clear we can no
longer concentrate so much potential for catastrophic violence in the hands of
one person. Sign the petition and call on Congress to keep us safe by
making it illegal for Trump to unilaterally start a nuclear war. We’ll
be delivering the petition and all the signatures to all Congressional offices
in DC.
We humans are an immature group. According to Brian Swimme, the minimum number of years it takes a species to adapt to earth's conditions is 100 million years. Humans have been around only 200 thousand years. That is a 500:1 disadvantage. With the nuclear threat, climate change, water shortage and terrorism, we need TIME to work these issues out. And we need time for ourselves to evolve. These changes will not just happen overnight. And, they will not happen unless we INTEND for them to happen.
We need a shift in our functioning on earth, to accelerate our growth as a species. Then, and only then, will we be entitled to a future. We must eliminate the nuclear threat immediately, and cool the planet, if we are going to make it.
